چکیده

The authors present a qualitative and quantitative comparison of various similarity measures that form the kernel of common areabased stereo-matching systems. The authors compare classical difference and correlationmeasures aswell as nonparametricmeasures based on the rank and census transforms for a number of outdoor images. For robotic applications, important considerations include robustness to image defects such as intensity variation and noise, the number of false matches, and computational complexity. In the absence of ground truth data, the authors compare the matching techniques based on the percentage of matches that pass the leftright consistency test. The authors also evaluate the discriminatory power of several match validity measures that are reported in the literature for eliminating false matches and for estimating match confidence. For guidance applications, it is essential to have an estimate of confidence in the three-dimensional points generated by stereo vision. Finally, a new validity measure, the rank constraint, is introduced that is capable of resolving ambiguous matches for rank transform–based matching. Evaluation of Similarity Measures for Template Matching

Image matching is a critical process in various photogrammetry, computer vision and remote sensing applications such as image registration, 3D model reconstruction, change detection, image fusion, pattern recognition, autonomous navigation, and digital elevation model (DEM) generation and orientation. The primary goal of the image matching process is to establish the correspondence between two ...

Utilization and Performance Considerations in Resource Optimized Stereo Matching for Real-time Reconfigurable Hardware

This paper presents a quantitative evaluation of a set of approaches for increasing the accuracy of an area-based stereo matching method. It is targeting real-time FPGA systems focused on low resource usage and maximized improvement per cost unit to enable concurrent processing. The approaches are applied to a resource optimized correspondence implementation and the individual and cumulative co...

Bioinformatics Inspired Algorithm for Stereo Correspondence

In this paper, we exploit the analogy between protein sequence alignment and image pair correspondence to design a bioinformatics-inspired framework for stereo matching based on dynamic programming. This approach also led to the creation of a meaningfulness graph, which helps to predict matching validity according to image overlap and pixel similarity. Finally, we propose an automatic procedure...

Evaluation of Stereo Matching Costs on Close Range, Aerial and Satellite Images

In the last years, most dense stereo matching methods use evaluation on the Middlebury stereo vision benchmark datasets. Most recent stereo algorithms were designed to perform well on these close range stereo datasets with relatively small baselines and good radiometric behaviour. In this paper, different matching costs on the Semi-Global Matching algorithm are evaluated and compared using the ...

Point, Line Segment, and Region-Based Stereo Matching for Mobile Robotics

At the heart of every stereo vision algorithm is a solution to the matching problem the problem of finding points in the right and left image that correspond to a single point in the real world. Applying assumptions regarding the epipolar rectification and color similarity between two frames is often not possible for real-world image capture systems, like those used rescue robots. More flexible...
